Tarsan woke up as light flickered into his den, a scrawny hollow bush rooted in a cave. The sand bedding was warm and cozy.
He slid out of his den and lapped up water from the drinking hole next to his den. If was always full, even in scorch-sand.
Currently it was turning from newsand (spring) to scorchsand (summer)
He padded out of his rocky den, the smooth rock beneath his paws. The rock turned to sand and the sun flashed around him as he stepped outside. His cool shady home was behind him, and a gentle breeze welcomed him, hot as a small fire. He smelked it and found traces of cactus, hawk, owl, snake, lizard, and a faint tinge of mountain lion. But mostly the scent of sand with no sign of refreshing rain.
He looked up and saw the sky, a wide expanse of never ending blue, with a bright beaming circle of yellow in the center, the sun. No clouds anywhere.
He made his way through the clump of cactii that surronded his home, providing protecting and a sorce of food when prey was scarce. He broke into a run. His paws thudded sgains the soft sand. The wind blasted in his furr.
He stopped at a smal hill of stone. A cactus popped up in the middle, surronded by a few rocks. He flipped a rock with his snout and found a sleeping fat lizard. It woke and scurried off. But tarsan was too fast and pinned it with one paw, and quickly devoured it.
He troted off to find more prey. Scurying around a few quicksand pits he found a big eagle. It was high though. He waited then suddenly made a rock pillar beneath him, lifting him up. This stunned the eagle for a few seconds, but that was all tarsen needed to sink his teeth into it. He ate it fast, then thust the rock pillar into the ground. His furr was hot and sweaty. His paws were aching. His skin was bhrning. His head whirled.
A heat wave.
The air around him seethed with flaming heat. He was toj far from home, though. He dashed off to a big tree, and colapsed upon it roots. He layed under it, panting.
